The 2011-12 NHL Season gets started on Thursday October 6, 2011 with three games including a great matchup original six matchup in Toronto between the Canadiens and the Leafs. The Leafs will be shorthanded to start the regular season. They will be without Clarke MacCarthur (2 game suspension) and Nazem Kadri (out 2-4 weeks with a sprained knee. Newcomer Tim Connoly is listed as questionable for the season opener. However, the Leafs defence could be much better this season. Toronto acquired John-Michael Liles and Cody Franson in the offseason to join Schenn, Phaneuf, and a Mike Komisarek who came into camp 20 pounds lighter and has looked much better so far in the pre-season. Rookie Jake Gardiner rounds out what could be a solid blue line if everything goes according to plans. The big question for Toronto is if G James Reimer can play a full NHL season at the same high level he played at to finish up the season last year.
As for the Canadiens they will be without defenceman Andrei Markov for the season opener. His rehab is on schedule but he just isn’t ready to go yet. Newcomer Eric Cole is expected to join Plekanec and Cammalleri on the Canadiens top line. With Carey Price back in goal for the Habs they will once again be solid in the defensive zone. Can the Canadiens find the back of the net more consistently this season?
